The year started out with some cold, frosty days in February which generally means great misty and moody photographs taken at Bushy…

Birds of Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve.

Hello fellow bird lovers. I have just returned from a great trip to South Africa to see family and enjoy a bit of a break from the cold in London . We were based in Durban in the province of Kwazulu Natal and as it’s about a 2 hour drive from the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, I thought it…

Louise - Hi Wayne, truly beautiful photographs. We visited the park over the past weekend – it was my sixth visit in 2 years and for the first time ever we saw the European Bee-eaters. If you visit again, Mkuze and Ithala are lovely for birders as well. Just a quick one though – is your 3rd kite not a black kite by any chance? :-)

January 7, 2013 - 10:39 am

Wayne - Hello Louise

Many thanks for the comments. I love the park as it is a little gem albeit very green this time round. I have been to Ithala, but many years ago.
I had a long debate on a forum over the kite and was told its a juvenile Yellow billed, although there were few dissenting voices. So I left it like that. I orginally had it as a Black kite…oh well I didn’t get a DNA test… ;-)

Autumn morning with the Canon 1Dx

First a little bit of the back story:  I have always traveled with two cameras on my trips, a primary and backup camera. They tend to get pretty banged up over time as I expect them to be tough workhorses. Over the last 3 years, the 1Dmk4 has stood up to a lot and survived superbly, my…

Graham Green - Gorgeous images, I especially like the image of the sun shining through the tree at dawn. It reminds me of one I took a couple of months ago with my humble 50D.

Update to the Rhino Poaching crisis

The latest media release from SANParks makes for sad reading – latest tally is 455 rhino killed. http://www.sanparks.org/about/news/default.php?id=55347 Will this little fella see adulthood??? What I have been trying to find out is the conviction rate of the 604 SOB’s that have been arrested. Prosecution vs conviction rates would also be nice to have. Anyone can help…

Humpback whales hunting

One of the major surprises for me on my recent Arctic trip was when we encountered 4 groups of hunting humpback whales. Since this trip was always about Polar bears, it was great to come across some other marine mammals. We had seen a lone Blue Whale earlier on in the trip, but getting photos…
